Meet Johanna

Johanna Flanagan is The Pale Rook. A name that has become synonymous with fine art doll making.

Johanna’s dolls are more than just dolls, they are extraordinarily beautiful works of sculptural art.

Described as self-portraits, they reflect the essence of what Johanna is feeling during the making process, a moment frozen in time, they are the keeper of her very deepest thoughts, dreams, hopes and fears.

Sometimes haunting, sometimes whimsical, hopeful, sad and sometimes a little playful. Whatever the outcome, it is clear to see the hours of love and attention that go into every piece.

From the fabric that has been carefully selected and hand dyed to the patch works of linen and silk all carefully hand-stitched and collaged together, Johanna finds beauty in the incomplete, the broken, the decayed, lost, unexpected and vulnerable.

Johanna lives in Scotland and her work can be found in private collections all over the world.
