What if your everyday handwriting could become a powerful creative tool?

TEXTure is a course that shows you how to turn your own writing, however messy, spiky, loopy, or bold, into striking visual compositions. Led by celebrated artist Claire Benn, and endorsed by Denise Lach, this course is about playing with text, not perfecting it.

Whether you’re a textile artist, mixed media maker, or simply text-curious, you’ll learn how to:

  • Let go of “good” handwriting and embrace expressive freedom
  • Explore texture, rhythm, colour, and line using pens, graphite, found tools and more
  • Transform your marks into visual texture and mood
  • Create mini compositions with impact and flair
  • Build a rich repertoire of expressive marks on paper, and even cloth through a BONUS module.
“Legibility isn’t the point, expression is.”

Claire Benn TEXTure (2)

Meet Claire Benn

Based in the beautiful region of Surrey in the United Kingdom, Claire Benn is a textile artist known for her use of text, texture, and unconventional materials. With a background in textile art and decades of experience in surface design, she’s spent years pushing the boundaries of what handwriting can be, from stitched words on cloth to layered marks on wood, paper, and even cupboard doors.

Claire’s work sits at the intersection of writing and abstraction. She’s not here to teach you perfect penmanship, she’s here to show you how to turn your own handwriting into something expressive, personal, and visually powerful - no calligraphy skills required!

In TEXTure, Claire will guide you through a playful, process-driven approach to mark-making. You’ll learn to use pens, twigs, forks, and handmade tools to explore line, movement, scale, and rhythm. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned artist, Claire will help you see text not just as words — but as raw material for making art.

Thank you so much Claire Benn for your generosity and inspiration. I have never had a teacher who went so far above and beyond the parameters of the course to touch ever single student no matter their experience.

Claire was so generous with her knowledge. She keeps classes interesting with experimentation and her great since humour.

I have truly adored Claire's teaching style. She is an exceptional instructor who adeptly guides the online classes. Her expertise shines through as she effortlessly imparts valuable information and techniques to her students. Claire's ability to navigate the virtual learning environment with ease is commendable, ensuring that each class is engaging and productive. I am grateful to have the opportunity to learn from such a remarkable teacher who possesses a deep understanding of her craft.

- Iaki Vallejo

I love how Claire draws you into the process of creation, leaving room for mishaps and building community within the shared new experiences. It was and still is an explosion of creativity equally shared by teacher and students. It took away my inhibition of doing something wrong. There is no wrong! I have never felt more inspired to move forward and try new ways of creating.
