Debbie challenged me to find a deeper meaning in my artistic endeavours (sound, sight, touch) as well as introducing a plethora of new methods to express my findings. I truly love learning, experimenting and just getting messy with it all!  I had so much fun. Very grateful that this expansive course can be reviewed anytime.

- Maëlle G

This course allowed me to find my place. Not in one art form, but in my story, my nature, my history, my “Sense of Being”.

- Karen W.

Before this course I was just 'looking' and recording what I saw. Now I can embed all my senses into my artwork making it more layered and complex and improving my connection to the environment around me.

- Carole N.

Amazing course. Debbie will teach you how to explore your local haunts and portray them in a way that is truly unique, truly you. It has impacted not only my art but how I look at the world and how I interact with the people around me.

- Diane A.

I’ve loved every minute of this workshop.  It’s helped me discover how to find and develop a theme, something I have struggled with in the past.

- Rachel P.

Debbie Lyddon is a fantastic instructor. If you are inspired by nature, are tactile, and like to immerse and feel your surroundings deeply, this is the course for you. The Take Two team does not disappoint with high-quality courses.

- Heather N.

This impressive course was revealing, insightful and so much fun!! This course took me out of my comfort zone and into a journey of so much discovery. It was exploratory interesting and insightful! The involvement of the senses in finding pathways to creativity was fantastic and reinforced some of the art practices that I also use. I loved the emphasis on play and exploring what you love. Highly recommend this course.

- Stella G.

Doing this course is like putting on the special glasses to watch a 3D film at the cinema: your experience becomes more vivid, multi-dimensional and immersive. It offers such a wide range of techniques and approaches.

- Tess D.

This course will be one of the best investments you will make in your art practice.

Art can be so much more than a visual response.

What if you could create authentic art by capturing the sounds and rhythms of your landscape?

Inspired by her coastal home in the old fishing town of Wells-next-the-Sea, Norfolk, Debbie Lyddon will guide you in exploring techniques that connect the materiality of the environment with your creative practice.

Whether you're seeking new perspectives or looking to deepen your creative practice, Sensing Place will give you the tools to explore, experiment, push your boundaries, and create without constraints.

Listen with more than your ears, look beyond what you see, and feel with more than your hands.

Discover the endless possibilities of contemporary weaving and expand your skills far beyond a single technique.

Create at your own pace.

The problem with a live class is that you are limited by time. But in this online experience, you will do the equivalent of half a dozen live workshops with Debbie (we did the math!). You’ll immerse yourself in a rich, multi-sensory journey through mixed media, using sight, sound and touch as tools for artistic discovery.

It may take you weeks – or even years – to explore everything Debbie shares. But by fully engaging with the course, you’ll unlock new ways of seeing, hearing and feeling your environment – and translate those experiences into powerful, personal works of art.

And best of all? With lifetime access, you can take it slow or dive right in. It’s up to you!

Debbie Lyddon

Hello, I'm Debbie Lyddon.

My art is a conversation with the sensory experiences of my environment – the call of the seabirds, the rhythm of the waves, and the tactile joy of natural textures under my hands. My practice is an exploration of sight, sound, and touch, inviting a dialogue between the artist and the landscape.

I'm here to share not just my techniques but the essence of how to weave your personal narrative into your art. Your likes, dislikes, memories, and experiences are the palette from which we'll draw. This course is about you using your landscape and your environment to create art that is deeply personal and uniquely yours.

My goal is to inspire you to create art that resonates with your deepest connections to place, using your observations and experiences as the foundation for your creativity.

This online workshop offers the freedom to delve deeply into the aspects that ignite your passion, giving you the space and time to perfect, understand, and create as much as you wish. Whether it's drawing, making notes, or finding new materials and techniques, I'm excited to see how you make these elements your own.

I look forward to inviting you into my landscape to inspire you to discover yours in a way you've never seen or heard before.

Join me in this journey of sensory exploration and personal discovery.

Here’s what you’ll learn in Sensing Place:

Module 1

Module one: Sight – Moments of being

Your opening module focuses on sharpening your sense of sight to transform how you observe and capture the world around you.

This module combines practical exercises with insightful teachings to help you see the environment through an artist's eyes. You'll explore wet media, large watercolour papers and bookbinding techniques.

By the end of this module, you'll possess a newfound appreciation for your surroundings, armed with the skills and confidence to document and express your sensory experiences in art that resonates with personal significance and beauty.

Module 2
Module two: Sight – Moments of being 2

Dive deeper into the art of observation as you build upon the foundational skills acquired in the first module. This stage of your journey emphasises collage-making, colour exploration, and refined artistic expression inspired by your initial sight walk discoveries.

By the end of this module, you'll possess a deeper ability to translate the richness of your environment into layered, textured, and colourful collage compositions, enabling you to draw more profound inspiration from your surroundings and turn your observations into captivating works of art.

* Please note that many of the concepts covered in this module may be familiar to experienced artists.

Module 3

Module three: Sound – Decorating the silence

This module offers a unique perspective shift into the world of deep listening and the visual translation of the soundscapes surrounding you. Empowering both novice and experienced artists to transform how you perceive and utilise sound in your artistic practice.

By the end of this module, you'll gain a profound ability to see sound as a rich vein of inspiration for your art. Armed with new skills to deeply listen, meticulously observe, and creatively translate auditory experiences, you'll be ready to produce visual artworks that resonate with the unseen beauty of sound.

Module 4

Module four: Sound – Decorating the silence 2

Delve further into the nuanced art of sound marking to uncover the profound significance of holes as a motif, drawing inspiration from the sculptor Barbara Hepworth's philosophy on the essence of space and form.

By the end of this module, you'll appreciate the artistic and symbolic potency of holes, equipped to incorporate them into your artworks as expressive soundmarks. This exploration opens new avenues to harness these voids as powerful centres for your artistic expression.

Module 5
Module five: Touch – Holding place

This module emphasises the profound impact of touch in art, exploring how elements imprint cloth with stories of endurance and change.

By the end of this module, you'll deeply appreciate touch's role in storytelling through textiles. You'll possess techniques to imbue your work with texture and narrative, ready to craft pieces that echo with depth and personal significance.

Module 6

Module six: Touch – Holding place 2

It’s time to dive into the creative potential of unconventional materials, transforming your artistic approach to embody the essence of place. Explore beyond traditional boundaries to discover how everyday items from hardware stores can enrich your artwork with depth and narrative.

By the end of this module, you’ll understand how unconventional materials and techniques can dramatically express a sense of place and narrative in your artwork. You'll emerge equipped with the confidence and inspiration to venture into new territories of material exploration, ready to create pieces that are as unique and evocative as the places they represent.

Module 7

Module seven: Action to form

Get excited as you’re now ready to dive into the art of creating dynamic 3D structures by transforming sketches into sophisticated cloth sculptures that mirror the complexity of your interactions with the natural world and moments of profound experience.

By the end of this module, you'll possess a comprehensive skill set to conceptualise, design, and execute three-dimensional artworks that resonate with your personal creative vision.

Module 8

Module eight: Waxed cloth collage

Debbie leads the transition from paper collage to cloth, enriching your artwork with layers of texture and colour through the innovative use of gesso, wax, and stitching.

By the conclusion of this module, you’ll grasp the intricate process of creating textured, visually compelling waxed collages with a deepened understanding of artistic composition. Armed with new skills in mixed-media techniques, you'll be inspired to push the boundaries of your creative expression.

Module 3-1

Module nine: Combining the senses

You’ve delved into sight, sound, and touch throughout this course. You are now ready to unite these sensory experiences, embracing the concept of phenomenology for a comprehensive understanding of the landscape.

Armed with a profound ability to utilise sensory perception, you’re ready to create art that speaks with depth and emotion inspired by your landscape.

With the insights gained from Debbie and your unique explorations, this module marks the beginning of your exploration, not the end!

Stories from our students...

Believe in your art because it believes in you.

I wanted to really look at and experience my place of belonging. This course gave me the tools and inspiration to experience my place in depth.

I have been creating and showing my art for many years, but I seem to keep bumping up against people who insist the words do not belong in fine art. This course has given me the courage to continue using and expanding my love of words and stories in my art. We are all made up of stories and journeys. Some are meant to be shared, others kept close by. All are worthy of becoming art.

- Lin L.

I felt a bit stuck in a rut with my art and didn't know where to go...

This course has reinforced for me the techniques and media I prefer to use, but also has introduced new techniques and media to add to my repertoire. I will definitely be dipping into these and will continue to explore how I can use them.

This course is high quality, with excellent content, coverage and support. It allows you to work entirely at your own pace, lingering where desired, and also to return to previous modules at any time. It will open your mind to intriguing new possibilities and stretch you to try new ways of creating.

- Karen A.G.

Lori’s story with Sensing Place...

Before the course, Lori doubted her skills, but the structure, pace, and encouragement in Sensing Place helped her unlock something extraordinary. In this Student Success Story, Lorri shares her experience with us...

Finding my artistic voice was a journey, not an overnight revelation.

It emerged gradually, intertwining my experiences, backgrounds, and the landscapes whispering to me. This evolution has taught me that art is not just about techniques but about embedding your soul into what you create.
With every piece of knowledge I've soaked up over the years, from the technical skills of playing the flute to the simple joy of knitting taught by my grandfather, I've learned the value of passing on what we know. Like them, I'm eager to share everything with you in this workshop.

Not everything may resonate with you, and that's okay. Embrace what you love, skim what you don't, and let your curiosity guide your exploration.

Together, we will embark on a journey that transcends traditional artistic boundaries, encouraging you to see, hear, and feel the world anew. I can't wait to share this sensory exploration with you and witness the unique ways in which your creativity unfolds.
