EIGHT WEEKS TUTOR ENGAGEMENT | LIFETIME ACCESS | PRIVATE ONLINE COMMUNITY

Move beyond flat textiles. Create commanding, sculptural works that carry meaning with Tina Marais.
Fibre has always been with us - clothing our bodies, carrying our stories, and connecting cultures.
But what if cloth could do more? What if it could hold memory, movement, and meaning, becoming art that speaks in three dimensions?
Under the guidance of internationally acclaimed artist Tina Marais, it’s easier than you might think. In Soft Revolution, Tina shares the exact methods and techniques that took her from kitchen-table explorations to international exhibitions.
In just weeks, you’ll learn how to transform everyday materials into sculptural works that resonate far beyond the surface.

From birth to death, we are covered in textiles. They comfort us, protect us, carry our memories. My work is about honouring that – transforming cloth into sculptural forms that hold presence, movement and story.

Tina's sculptures have been exhibited across Canada, France, China and beyond, and she is deeply committed to showcasing fibre as a contemporary art form. Her projects have connected communities, challenged perceptions of fibre art, and helped reposition textiles as fine art of global relevance.
As a teacher, Tina is extremely generous, practical and deeply philosophical. She shows you every step – but also invites you to think about why you are making, and how to find your own voice through fibre.

MODULE ONE
Visual communication and material translation
You’re invited to look closely at the world around you - its textures, folds, and organic patterns - and translate those discoveries into fabric. Through drawing, mark-making, and observation, you’ll start building a visual language for your sculptural practice.
- See textures and forms in your environment with fresh eyes.
- Develop a sketchbook of inspiration to guide your work.
- Let natural observation spark ideas for textile sculpture.

MODULE TWO
Surface texture: connecting with nature
Dive into hand-stitching, wrapping, and binding to create a library of textural samples - foundations for larger sculptural works that reveal how repetition and gesture bring cloth to life.
- A collection of stitched and wrapped textures for future work.
- Insight into how repetition creates rhythm and meaning.
- Confidence to experiment with tactile detail.

MODULE THREE
Surface texture: grids, stitches, and rhythm
Drawing on urban structures and architectural lines, you’ll explore Canadian smocking and folding techniques that bring grid-like rhythm and structure to your textiles.
- Practical experience with Canadian smocking and advanced folding.
- Skills to create sculptural surfaces with dimension and strength.
- Insight into how architecture can inspire your textile work.

MODULE FOUR
Layering through appliqué
Inspired by graffiti, weathering, and layered cityscapes, you’ll explore appliqué and reverse appliqué to create surfaces full of history and texture.
- Versatile skills in appliqué and reverse appliqué.
- The ability to use layering as design and metaphor.
- Samples that capture the energy of urban environments.

MODULE FIVE
Binding and material relationships
This module explores how everyday objects - buttons, doorknobs, and fragments - can be bound and woven into textiles, showing how repetition transforms the ordinary into the extraordinary.
- Assemblage skills to incorporate found objects into your work.
- An understanding of how multiples create presence and narrative.
- Confidence in seeing overlooked materials as creative gold.

MODULE SIX
Organic pattern drafting
Tina introduces her pattern drafting technique for textile sculpture, teaching you to deconstruct forms into pieces, and sew them into sculptural bases.
- A method for creating simple sculptural bases.
- Understanding of how fabric types affect results.
- A foundation to build textile sculptures with ease.

MODULE SEVEN
Sculptural forms: advanced pattern editing
You’ll advance your pattern drafting skills with darts, multi-panel forms, and complex shapes, expanding your sculptural vocabulary and control.
- Design and construct advanced multi-panel forms.
- Use darts and inserts to add dimension and volume.
- Shape cloth with greater control and intention.

MODULE EIGHT
Connecting sculptural structures
Some sculptures need a solid base. Here, you’ll learn to build armatures from wood, cardboard, or found objects and upholster them with fabric, enabling larger-scale work.
- Skills to combine textiles with armatures for structure.
- Experience upholstering unconventional bases.
- Freedom to create larger, bolder sculptures.

MODULE NINE
Surface texture: finishing touches
This module explores distressing, beadwork, embroidery, and painting to refine and complete your pieces. Detail informs impact, and it’s good to know when a work is finished
- A toolkit of finishing techniques to elevate your work.
- Confidence in knowing when a piece is complete.
- Sculptures that feel polished and exhibition-ready.

MODULE TEN
Installation considerations
Tina will share insights from her international exhibitions and you’ll learn to present your work confidently; wall-mounted, suspended, or in installations.
- Display your sculptures with professional presence
- Understand how installation shapes meaning
- Approach exhibitions and galleries with confidence

BONUS MODULE
Ceramic and textile, earth and fibre
In this very special bonus, Tina teams up with French ceramic artist Adeline Contreras to explore what happens when clay and cloth meet, revealing how fragility and resilience can coexist.
- Insights from a rare collaboration between two world-class artists
- New ideas for combining textiles with other materials
- An expanded vision of fibre in contemporary practice
The methods I teach are adapted for textile sculpture, not just to show you steps, but to help you understand form so you have the freedom to create what you imagine.

We also have multiple moderators actively engaged within the group to ensure our communities remain safe and welcoming learning environments.
This community is not compulsory, but it’s highly recommended – and our students love it!
