Once you begin, you won’t want to stop

What if a book didn’t need pages… or even words? What if art didn’t have to hang on a wall?

Unbound is a playful and accessible online course for artists of all kinds. Guided by printmaker and mixed media artist Toni Hartill, you’ll discover unconventional bookmaking techniques and creative structures that challenge everything you thought you knew about books, and even about art itself.

If you’re inspired by paper, texture, fabric, or stories and curious about what’s possible with the materials you most likely already have, Unbound will help you create extraordinary artist’s books full of meaning, movement, and surprise.

Jude Gordon - Hartill Testimonial

Toni’s approach to making and her empathy and encouragement for her students has expanded my own printing practice. It has allowed me to view my own work from different perspectives and the courage to take risks.

- Jude G - Unfolding Ideas Workshop 2022

Attending Toni's Unfolding Ideas workshop opened up a new world of creative possibility for me, a way to turn the accumulated work and experiments from my art practice into something meaningful and purposeful by using various folding techniques to create books and shapes. Toni's shares her skills in an easy-to-follow way that gives you confidence to explore.  Her work is truly beautiful and her generosity in sharing her process is inspirational.

- Diana C - Unfolding Ideas workshop, 2024

Karen Samsom - Hartill Testimonial

Toni’s Unfolding Ideas workshop truly lived up to its name — it gave me a burst of creative energy and a fresh perspective on how manipulating paper shapes can inform and elevate my own mixed media art. Toni has a rare gift: not only is she a talented artist, but she’s also an exceptional workshop facilitator who knows how to inspire and guide others.

Julie Moonlight - Hartill Testimonial

As well as being so much fun, I learned heaps in Toni's workshop. It opened my eyes to folded book structures that I didn't know existed and took my abilities in artist's books to a whole new level!

- Julie M - Unfolding Ideas workshop, 2023

Rebecca Beyer - Hartill Testimonial

Toni's workshop was so much fun. She clearly explained the techniques and had great examples to illustrate how to make the books.  We tried lots of different designs and Toni gave us all the resources we needed to keep on exploring at home.  Toni creates a warm, supportive learning environment.

- Rebecca B - Unfolding Ideas  workshop, 2023

Louise James - Hartill Testimonial

I attended Toni's "Unfolding Ideas" workshop. She is an excellent teacher with a calm and easy going approach. Toni was generous with her ideas, tips and creativity- whilst being very organised and encouraging. I would highly recommend a course with her!

Unbound is a treasure trove of techniques, prompts, and possibilities that’ll carry you through years of making.

Create at your own pace.

The problem with live workshops? There’s never quite enough time. But in this online course, you’ll have the space to go deeper and the freedom to progress in a way that works for you.

You might spend a week experimenting with folded forms, then return months later to explore your mark-making workbook. Some techniques will spark instant ideas; others may take longer to unfold. But that’s how meaningful art is made: slowly, with curiosity and practice.

In this comprehensive course, you’ll learn a variety of book structures and discover how to develop ideas through folding, printing, layering, and stitching. Whether you see artist’s books as stand-alone sculptural pieces or as part of your broader art practice, Unbound will help you build a body of work that’s entirely your own.

This isn’t a traditional bookbinding course.

In Unbound, you’ll create unconventional artist’s books that twist, open, hide, surprise, and delight.

What you’ll walk away with:

HArtill collection close up

A collection of finished artist’s books made from materials you most likely already have!

Hartill variety opf books

The ability to create a variety of book structures, including concertinas, cascade books, hand-folded boxes, and more.

Hartill printing technioques

Techniques that apply across fibre art, mixed media, and printmaking.

Hartill opening book

A workbook of new marks, colours, techniques, and ideas to revisit.

Hartill holed books

A more playful, expansive view of what your art practice can hold.

Hartill working in a eries

Tools and strategies for working in series and building a cohesive body of work.

.... And the confidence to keep making long after the course ends!

Artist’s books aren’t just a cute hobby. They’re a legitimate and collectible art form.
- Toni Hartill

Hi, I’m Toni Hartill...

Creativity has always defined me yet only recently have I fully embraced the title of artist.

Via my infatuation with printmaking I was introduced to the concept of artist’s books - a pivotal moment that reignited my playful spirit and pushed my practice beyond traditional boundaries.

My first solo exhibition, showcasing my sculptural and artist’s book-based works, proved transformative and affirmed my self-identity as an artist. The enthusiastic response, including acquisitions into two special collections, marked the beginning of a new chapter.
And now, I’m eager to share my passion for artist’s books with others.

No matter where you are in your creative journey I’ll guide you through simple techniques as stepping stones to more complex ideas.

In my own practice I always feel compelled to challenge what it is that makes an artist’s book a “book” and to push ideas beyond the page-turning experience.
That’s why I won’t be teaching you how to bind books in a traditional sense. Instead I’ll encourage you to defy conventions, and spark new directions through play and experimentation.

You’ll never look at your household items in the same way again!

The intimate, tactile and interactive nature of artist’s books inspires me most. I can’t wait to see what will inspire you and how your work will develop and evolve throughout this course.

I'm more or less putting myself through a "degree" with all your courses! This is a change in medium for me and i'm loving fibre arts immensely. What a great and inclusive arts space you have created. I'm in a remote area, in the back blocks of a very small state in Australia and to have access to quality courses, led by world class artists is a true gift! Thank you.

- Kerryn B.

There is a deep sense of respect and sensitivity that runs through this community and the courses you present offer life-transforming opportunities to the participants.
It's amazing how safe it feels to communicate within the space you/we have collectively created.

- Su B.

I also want to say I am so happy I found Fibre Arts Take Two because I am impressed by the quality of the courses, the way they are built up, the course materials and exeptional filming allows the beautiful and skilled teachers to shine even more. So thank you so much for being here.

- Marieke E.

I have taken two courses from Fibre Arts Take Two so far. Both have been outstanding experiences... better than any online art courses I have taken so far. The teachers are incredibly generous with their information and support through Q&A sessions and private FB groups. The quality of the video/audio/etc is high quality and beautiful. I enthusiastically recommend courses from Fibre Arts Take Two and look forward to taking more of them myself!

- Kathy C

The Fibre Arts Take Two courses are addictive overall and the FB groups are the most supportive and informative I have ever been in. They form an integral part of the experience.

My discovery of artist’s books as a legitimate and widely enjoyed form of artistic expression, by artists and audiences globally, was a pivotal experience for me and it allowed my work to break free of the constraints of traditional conventions.

I’m especially inspired by the interactive and intimate nature of artist’s books as a means to express ideas in tactile and multi-dimensional ways.

I’m therefore excited to have this opportunity to share my passion for artist’s books with you, to invite you to explore ways of taking your own ideas in new and unexpected directions, and dimensions, whatever your starting point, experience or preferred medium.

Whether your creations are an end goal, or a means to explore ideas and concepts more deeply within your practice, my aim is to support you to build your confidence, and your curiosity, and to encourage you to break free from any barriers that may be holding you back.

I relish this opportunity to share so many of my skills and processes with you and I’m certain this has the potential to be a transformative experience for you too. Do join me!
