The Way of Wabi Sabi Collage - Student Exhibition 2025

When we think of Wabi Sabi, we think of things, either in nature or man-made, that have been affected by the passage of time. These things have become rusty, weathered, worn, torn, and yellowed. As we look at these things, we look at the smaller details and find the beauty in them, due to the passage of time, weather, and usage.

Transience is also an important concept in Wabi Sabi. ‘Mono no aware’ is a Japanese concept that translates to a sensitivity to the ephemeral. It signifies a deep awareness of the transience of all things, encompassing both the beauty and sadness of the temporary nature of existence. This concept encourages appreciation of fleeting moments and the understanding that all things, including life itself, are subject to change. Hence, the part of Wabi Sabi where nothing lasts… is transience.

For example, we appreciate things in nature that don’t last very long… like spring blossoms, or mushrooms in the woods, or autumn leaves. Wabi Sabi also refers to a way of life as well as a particular type of beauty. Because nothing lasts, we should appreciate the fleeting moments and pay attention to details and live only in this moment, never to be repeated… so value every moment.

Participants were encouraged to see their world with a different lens and look for the smaller details and imperfections. They were encouraged to experiment, and try new ways to create collage papers, and push themselves towards more meaningful and personal expressions.  By looking for more personal expression, they discovered a deeper connection to their work and themselves. 

As you look through this exhibition, I hope you see that each individual worked on their own unique style and artistic voice. I hope you see their bravery and dedication to finding their own identity.  And I hope you find the beauty and creativity in 'Transience'.
