Unbound - Artist's books - Student Exhibition 2025
As I contemplated a theme for this exhibition for students of Unbound, I was immediately drawn to think of what the title Unbound came to mean to me as I created the course, and how the students have responded beyond my wildest imaginings, as can been seen in this beautiful presentation of their works.
Although this course is, on the face of it, about ways of creating artist’s books that are not bound or that follow traditional formats, this course is really about letting go of conventions and restrictions - all those little voices in your head that tell you what you should or shouldn’t do - and embracing the adventure of not really knowing what you are capable of, or where your ideas will take you.
"How can you know what you're capable of if you don't embrace the unknown?"
Esmeralda Santiago's quote speaks to the importance of stepping outside of your comfort zone and exploring new experiences. Embracing the unknown allows us to discover our strengths, resilience, and potential that we might not otherwise realize. It encourages curiosity and openness as valuable lessons are learned and new skills are developed.
During my tutor interaction period I was constantly in awe and so inspired by the students’ work and how they threw themselves into the tasks with such ingenuity and passion. Whatever their prior knowledge or experiences students seemed to delight in the opportunity to challenge their previous ways of working or any pre-conceived ideas of what a “book” could possibly be and to unleash new potential and growth in their work. Whether a gentle step on their personal journey or a giant leap into their unknown, Uncharted is a celebration of their personal journey beyond their previously perceived boundaries.
So, it is with great pleasure that I welcome you to view this beautiful exhibition.
