I often don't know where I'm going, but I'm enjoying the journey. I would hate to have to make something exactly like a drawing – the work evolves. If it works, it works. If it doesn't, it's just a piece of fabric. It doesn't matter.

Takeaways from this episode

  • Retirement as a creative beginning.
After 15 years teaching art textiles, Marian embraced retirement not as an end, but as the moment her personal practice could fully unfold. “Life has begun at retirement,” she says – a reminder that it’s never too late to begin your best work.

  • Letting the work evolve.
Marian doesn’t sketch or plan her pieces. Instead, she follows the materials – melting, dyeing, layering – allowing unexpected results to shape the path ahead. Her process is a testament to curiosity, risk-taking, and deep listening.

  • Texture over colour.
Though inspired by the natural world, Marian purposefully works in a muted palette. “I think colour detracts from the texture,” she says. This restraint invites viewers to look closer – to feel the work with their eyes.

  • Art as generosity.
Whether answering questions at exhibitions or letting visitors touch her work, Marian holds nothing back. She shares freely, teaches through example, and invites others into the playful, tactile joy of making.

  • Nothing is off limits.
From bath mats and zip lengths to meat packaging and flower protectors, Marian’s materials are humble, salvaged, and often overlooked. But in her hands, they become ethereal – proving that beauty and innovation often start in the everyday.
